Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville picked their teams of the season on MNF last night

Do you agree with their selections?

ON THE FINAL Monday Night Football of the season, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville reflected on the year as a whole as they handed out their awards for the 2016/17 campaign.

Champions Chelsea and runners-up Tottenham unsurprisingly dominated the duo’s team of the season selections, with Carragher and Neville in agreement over the inclusion of seven players.

Carragher opted for a 3-4-3 diamond formation but included David de Gea, Christian Eriksen, David Silva and Alexis Sanchez while Neville chose Thibaut Courtois, Danny Rose, Kevin de Bruyne and Diego Costa in his 4-4-2 system.

“I think David De Gea is possibly the best goalkeeper in the world. It’s close between him and Manuel Neuer, but I would probably go for De Gea,” Carragher explained.

“I’ve gone for a back three. We’ve spoken about the season Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz have had and one of the Tottenham centre-backs had to be in it. It was a toss-up and I just went for Toby Alderweireld over Jan Vertonghen.

“I’ve gone for more of a diamond midfield than in the graphic above. N’Golo Kante is holding – he’s been the best central midfield player.”

The former Liverpool defender added: “I’ve got David Silva tucked in on the left, where he has been playing for Man City and has been a revelation.

“How many goals has Christian Eriksen created from the inside right channel? I’d have Dele Alli behind the front three, who has been one of the players of the season. He has been outstanding.”

Neville explained his selection: “I went for Thibaut Courtois. Not because I think overall he is a better keeper than De Gea, but I think he’s probably had a better season. I think those two are outstanding goalkeepers.

“I’ve gone for a back four and at left-back I have gone for Danny Rose, even though he has missed some football recently. He has been outstanding and Tottenham’s back four needed representing well in the team of the season.

“You could argue Diego Costa tailed off a little bit, but from my point of view, he has resurged this season as a brilliant centre-forward. I would always have gone for Sergio Aguero historically, in terms of being the best.

“I have also gone for Kevin De Bruyne because I think that his quality is far and above anybody in a wide area in the league. By an absolute street he is far and above anybody.

“I think there is more he can do, similar to Eden Hazard and they have both got that step up in them. I also agree Kante and Alli should be in central midfield.”

Meanwhile, the Sky Sports pundits also handed out their awards for goal, player, manager, young player and signing of the season.
