Is the Premier League set to lose the fourth Champions League spot?

Poor results in Europe from the English top-flight sides could have big ramifications as early as 2017.

THE LATEST UEFA rankings have confirmed that the Premier League is in serious danger of losing the fourth Champions League spot in the 2017-18 season.

The most recent figures show that Italy is closing in on third spot in the coefficients table, as they are currently just four points behind England. If recent trends were to continue and Serie A displaced the Premier League in the rankings, the Italian league would consequently claim the coveted fourth Champions League spot for one of its teams.

The table is subject to change, based on the equal value afforded to Champions League and Europa League results, with the poor starts to their European campaign by several English clubs this year not boding well for the future.

The rankings take into account the last five years, and England will soon no longer be able to rely on the 2010-11 season, which was particularly successful from Premier League teams’ perspective, weakening their status significantly as a result.

Ireland, meanwhile, remain in 41st position following this season’s European results, behind Macedonia and just ahead of Latvia.
