WHATEVER THE RESULT, this afternoon’s Pool D clash between Ireland and Romania at Wembley will enter rugby’s record books.

With a sizeable Irish diaspora in London and large swathes of fans making the short hop over, the home of English football was turned green – and a new record was set in the process.

The official attendance of 89,297 surpasses the previous Rugby World Cup record by 248.

Last week’s clash between New Zealand and Argentina at the same venue attracted a crowd of 89,019 which trumped the 82,957 fans who watched the 2003 final in Sydney.

It’s the ninth highest rugby union attendance with New Zealand’s narrow win at Stadium Australia in 2000 (109,874) topping the list.

Today’s record is another reflection of the huge Irish following and support base behind Joe Schmidt’s side.

With this game being Wembley’s last of the tournament, this record is set to stand for the next four years and beyond.
