Ireland U19s beat Poland, but agonisingly miss Euro qualification by a point

Hayley Nolan and Dearbhaile Byrne got the goals in Tallaght Stadium.

IRELAND FINISHED THEIR qualification campaign with a 2-0 win over Poland, but it wasn’t enough to see them book their place at the Women’s U19 European Championships.

Second-half goals from Hayley Nolan and Dearbhaile Byrne ensured that Dave Connell’s side finished second in Group 1 on six points.

But with only one place at the finals in Slovakia available for the best runner-up, they missed out to Norway by a point.

“The girls performed brilliantly and deserved more,” Connell said.

“But we can look to the future with a lot of positivity because the girls who leave us are capable of going to a higher level and the next batch of girls coming through are very talented too.”
