Wexford football captain Murphy and Niamh Briggs named in development squad for Ireland 7s

With the front-liners still on World Series duty, Anthony Eddy has introduced some new names to gain experience in Amsterdam.

WEXFORD FOOTBALL CAPTAIN Roisin Murphy and Ireland’s 15-a-side skipper Niamh Briggs have been included a development squad for this weekend’s Amsterdam 7s.

The trip will be Murphy’s first taste of Sevens rugby and she will be joined in the squad by fellow newcomers to the senior scene; Emma Murphy and Chloe Blackmore, who have represented Ireland Sevens at age grade level.

Briggs has been upping her Sevens involvements in recent months, but in this form of the game she will defer her captaincy duties to Claire Keohane. The Munster woman is flanked by Shannon Houston, Katie Fitzhenry, Eimear Considine, Elaine Ryan and Nicole Cronin who have all represented Ireland Women’s Sevens at international level.

“The side heading to Amsterdam has a wealth of experience, but it’s also really pleasing to see the likes of Emma, Chloe and Roisin all taking the next step in their development,” says IRFU Sevens directory Anthony Eddy.

We have a team competing in the final stage of the World Series in Clermont this weekend and also have the European Championships and of course, the Olympic Repechage tournament coming up in UCD in June.

“We have a very talented group of players in the programme and it’s important that they can play in as many competitive games as possible.”
