Highly-rated Man United and Brighton starlets included in Ireland U17 squad for Euros

Lee O’Connor and Aaron Connolly have made the cut for the tournament in Croatia.

MAN UNITED’S LEE O’Connor and Brighton’s Aaron Connolly are among the players included in Ireland’s squad for the upcoming Uefa European U17 Championship in Croatia.

The team will depart on Monday ahead of their opening game against Serbia on Thursday, with head coach Colin O’Brien confirming his 18-man travelling party today.

The squad also contains a number of domestic-based players, with 10 of the panel currently playing their football in Ireland.

“Everybody is ready to go,” O’Brien said. “The squad has been named and obviously we had a few tough decisions to make — that’s the nature of the international game. We’ve had over 20 players that have contributed this year in the campaign.

“We’ve had two pull out from the original squad. Glen McAuley from Liverpool has withdrawn for his own personal reasons and Conor Coventry from West Ham United has a broken toe, so that will force him out of the campaign.”

O’Brien’s side qualified in impressive fashion, winning all six of their games, recording four clean sheets and scoring 16 goals in the process.

The top two in each group will progress to the last-eight, while the final tournament will determine Uefa’s five spots for the 2017 Fifa U17 World Cup in India next October.
