Ian Madigan has been called into Schmidt’s squad for the trip in place of Sexton, with Ulster’s Paddy Jackson now set to start in the 10 shirt against the Springboks in the first of three Tests on 11 June.
Craig Gilroy and Matt Healy have also been added to Schmidt’s Ireland group as replacements for Dave Kearney and Luke Fitzgerald, who was ruled out earlier this week.
Tieran O’Halloran has been called up instead of Rob Kearney.
Sexton sustained his shoulder injury in Leinster’s Guinness Pro12 final defeat to Connacht at Murrayfield and underwent an operation to remedy the damage on Tuesday. He is expected to be out for three months.
Dave Kearney sustained a grade-two calf tear in the same game, while Rob Kearney suffered a hamstring strain in Ireland training yesterday.
