Ireland running out of strikers as Walters and Murphy return to their clubs

Neither player will feature against Slovakia on Tuesday.

JON WALTERS AND Daryl Murphy are the latest players to be ruled out of Tuesday’s international friendly game against Slovakia.

Stoke forward Walters was expected to recover in time to feature after sitting out last night’s win over Switzerland, but the FAI has released an update confirming he has returned to his club after a latest assessment.

Kevin Doyle of Colorado Rapids is out for a number of weeks after receiving plastic surgery on a nasty gash to his leg. Ipswich Town’s Daryl Murphy replaced Doyle last night but was forced off before the final whistle and will also miss out on Tuesday.

Last night, manager Martin O’Neill revealed that captain Robbie Keane won’t play either as he is struggling to shake off a knee injury.

That leaves Southampton’s Shane Long the only fit striker in the current squad.
