IRELAND’S U20 SIDE will be without scrum-half and captain Nick McCarthy for the remainder of the World Championship after a shoulder injury ended his tournament.

The Leinster academy player suffered the injury during Tuesday’s 25-3 defeat to New Zealand, which ended their chances of making it to the last four of the tournament.

Munster’s Jack Cullen has been called up as cover for the injured McCarthy, meaning Ireland will now have to complete the tournament without their first choice half-back pairing, after Ross Byrne withdrew from the squad with a back injury last week.

Head coach will now hand the captaincy over to second row Josh Murphy for Monday’s 5th place semi-final against Wales.
