Meyler captains Ireland as starting XI named for tonight's must-win World Cup qualifier

Group D minnows Moldova are in Dublin to take on the Boys in Green.

IRELAND HAVE NAMED their team for tonight’s World Cup qualifier at home to Moldova (7.45pm).

The Boys in Green need three points against Group D’s bottom-placed side this evening before another must-win game away to Wales on Monday.

Martin O’Neill has made three changes from the team that lost 1-0 to Serbia last month. Suspended pair Robbie Brady and James McClean drop out along with the injured Jon Walters.

The Ireland boss sang Callum O’Dowda’s praises during yesterday’s press conference and the 22-year-old has been handed his first competitive start ahead of Aiden McGeady.

Burnley’s Jeff Hendrick returns to the midfield to partner captain David Meyler, while in-form striker Nottingham Forest striker Daryl Murphy, who has six goals in the Championship this season, comes in up front.

Wes Hoolahan and Shane Long also get the nod in attack.

IRELAND: Randolph; Christie, Duffy, Clark, Ward; Meyler (c), Hendrick, Hoolahan, O’Dowda; Long, Murphy.
