Ireland's World Cup dream alive after dramatic shoot-out victory over France

Craig Fulton’s side are one win away from a first World Cup since 1990.

IRELAND ARE ONE game away from qualifying for the Hockey World Cup for the first time since 1990 after a dramatic victory over France in their World League clash in Johannesburg this afternoon.

After Shane O’Donoghue’s stroke drew Ireland level and forced the playoff tie into a winner-takes-all shoot-out, David Harte made two fine saves before Chris Cargo sealed a 4-3 win.

Craig Fulton’s side now advance to the fifth/sixth place playoff where they will face New Zealand with victory securing a direct ticket to next summer’s World Cup in India.
