McClean: Cardiff winner sees Ireland rise eight places. Ryan Byrne/INPHO

Ireland have made a big jump in the latest Fifa World Rankings

Ireland face play-off against Switzerland, Italy, Croatia or Denmark as seedings confirmed.

IRELAND HAVE JUMPED eight places in the latest Fifa World Rankings as Martin O’Neill’s side await their play-off fate in Tuesday morning’s draw.

Victory against Wales has seen the Boys in Green move back up to 26th in the world after they dropped outside the top 30 in September.

As expected, they will be unseeded along with Northern Ireland (23rd), Sweden (25th) and Greece (47th) when the draw for the 2018 World Cup play-off takes place in Zurich.

The four seeded teams are Switzerland (11th), Italy (15th), Croatia (18th) and Denmark (19th).

Elsewhere in the rankings, the top five remain unchanged with Germany leading the way from Brazil, Portugal, Argentina and Belgium.

England move up three places to 12th, Wales drop one to 14th, while Scotland – who narrowly missed out on a playoff spot of their own – are up 14 places to 29th.
