TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS WILL be in place for the clash of the Republic of Ireland and England at the Aviva Stadium this afternoon.
The match kicks off at 1pm, having been brought forward from 7.15pm to minimise the amount of drinking done by fans.
A Garda Cordon will be in effect on the streets that lead to the ground, while the following roads are closed to through traffic: Lansdowne Park, Lansdowne Lane, Lansdowne Rd from Shelbourne Rd to Herbert Bridge, Herbert Rd, Newbridge Ave, Bath Ave, Londonbridge Rd. according to AA Roadwatch.
The following roads will be closed to through traffic from 11am on: the remainder of Lansdowne Rd from Shelbourne Rd to Pembroke Rd, Shelbourne Rd, Beatty’s Ave and Ballsbridge Ave.
Media reports suggest that as many as 400 gardaí will be on duty for the game with some 5,000 English fans in Dublin for the weekend.
The game marks the first meeting of the countries on Irish soil in the 20 years since the infamous Lansdowne Road riot in 1995, when English hooligans caused the game to be abandoned.
A repeat of those infamous scenes is not expected.
Last night England manager Roy Hodgson and his captain Wayne Rooney called for calm among supporters today, with Hodgson saying he hopes “that both sets of fans behave themselves and, in particular, our fans do not try to provoke the Irish fans by doing things they really should not do”.
