As it happened: Ireland v Argentina, Autumn Nations Series

Relive all the action from the Aviva Stadium as it happened.

LAST UPDATE | 21 Nov 2021

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Ireland’s third and final game of the November international window.

Ciarán Kennedy here to keep you posted on all the action from the Aviva Stadium, where Andy Farrell’s team are looking to make in three wins from three in the Autumn Nations Series.

It’s a bright, crisp day in Dublin, which will hopefully lead to more attacking rugby. Kick-off today is at 2.15pm.

There’s some late changes to the Ireland matchday squad, with Jack Conan ruled out through injury. In his place, Peter O’Mahony starts in the back row as Caelan Doris shifts across to number eight, while Ryan Baird comes onto the bench.

There’s also plenty of good reading on The42 to keep you entertained ahead of kick-off, starting with Murray Kinsella’s match preview, which you can find here.

Farrell wants to see a continuation of Ireland’s good decision-making and execution with ball-in-hand today. The Irish attack has been thrilling over the past fortnight and Farrell wants his players to keep going with it.

It will be interesting to see how some of the squad’s younger players handle to occasion, with Ulster wing Robert Baloucoune starting on the right wing.

On the bench, Leinster’s Harry Byrne is in line to win his second Test cap. The 22-year-old is highly rated by the Ireland coaches, and has long stood out as a potential international-quality player. You can read about his rise to prominence here.

“His speed of pass and speed of vision were just stand out straight away. He could see things in a split-second. I remember thinking he just had it upstairs. Straight away you could see the potential.”

It’s a big day for Joey Carbery, who starts at out-half for just the ninth time at international level.

Yesterday, Ireland attack coach Mike Catt backed the Munster player to make the most of the opportunity.

“Joey just needs to direct the ship and make sure he does what’s right for the team. He’s well capable of doing that, and then to show his point of difference.”

Argentina line up as announced. We’re 15 minutes away from kick-off now, and the crowd is building nicely.

Another late change for Ireland just before kick-off. Iain Henderson drops out of the team, with Tadhg Beirne coming in and Nick Timoney upgraded to the bench.

TRY – Ireland 0 Argentina 5 (Carreras, 3mins)

4mins: Ireland 0 Argentina 7

Well, that was not the start Ireland wanted. With their first attack of the evening, Argentina slice through the Ireland defence down the left wing, James Lowe bites in on a tackle and the space opens up for Mateo Carreras to cut inside Tadhg Beirne and dot down. Emiliano Boffelli converts and Argentina take an early lead.

Penalty – Ireland 3 Argentina 7 (Carbery)

TRY – Ireland 10 Argentina 7 (Van der Flier, 12mins)

13mins: Ireland 10 Argentina 7

Well that’s about as good a response as you could have asked for.

Ireland move into a good attacking position after great work from Ronan Kelleher and Robbie Henshaw down the right wing. They win a penalty, and Carbery opts to kick to the corner.

Kelleher’s throw finds Tadhg Beirne, and Ireland’s maul completely overpowers Argentina, with Josh van der Flier applying the finish touch. Carbery converts and Ireland lead by three.

TRY – Ireland 17 Argentina 7 (Porter, 24mins)

25mins: Ireland 17 Argentina 7

It’s turning into a day for the forwards as Andrew Porter supplies try number two for Ireland.

Another nice passing move got Ireland up the pitch from a scrum around the half-way line, with Murray, Ringrose and Lowe combining nicely before Ireland end up with a lineout. They mauled forward again, but this time were met with more Argentina resistance. The maul moves infield before breaking up, and Ireland get over for a second try though Porter under the posts. Carbery converts and Ireland hold a 10-point lead.

29mins: Ireland 17 Argentina 7

Bit of a let off for Ireland as Boffelli pulls a close-range penalty wide after Porter is penalised. There’s a slight wind here, but that was a poor miss from the Argentina fullback.

33mins: Ireland 17 Argentina 7

Another penalty miss from Argentina, Boffelli wide from just inside the Ireland half. From the next play Argentina cut through the Ireland defence, but Carreras spills the ball just short of the tryline. Argentina are leaving too many points behind them here.

An early substitution then sees Carreras make way for Facundo Cordero.

TRY – Ireland 24 Argentina 7 (Doris, 38mins)

39mins: Ireland 24 Argentina 7

Try number three for Ireland, and again it comes courtesy of the forward pack. Robert Baloucoune found himself in some space down the left but was closed down quickly. Ireland recycle the ball infield and Doris shows superb strength to power over, crashing into two Argentina defenders before getting the try at the second attempt. Carbery converts again.

Meanwhile James Ryan has been removed with an injury, so Ryan Baird enters the action.

HALF-TIME: Ireland 24 Argentina 7

Not quite as polished a performance as last week, but Ireland are in control at the break. There have been flashes of that attacking quality we saw again Japan and New Zealand, but so far the scores have all come via that powerful Ireland pack.

We’ll be back shortly with all the second half action.

The second half is underway.

47mins: Ireland 24 Argentina 7

Argentina applying some pressure in the opening moments of the second half. They win a penalty, and go to the corner. The lineout goes all the way to the back and Ireland win possession but quickly turn the ball over. The Pumas win another penalty and go for the corner again.

Again, the throw is overhit and Ireland break forward, with Baird almost going the length of the pitch from a Murray box-kick. Ireland go through the phases – with Furlong barreling through a sea of bodies. It eventually breaks down and there’s a bit of a coming together, and the two captains get a warning.

It’s going to be an Ireland penalty for a deliberate knock-on, and a yellow card for Pablo Matera.

PENALTY – Ireland 27 Argentina 7 (Carbery)

52mins: Ireland 27 Argentina 7

Dan Sheehan, Craig Casey and Harry Byrne are all on the pitch. Byrne comes in for Keenan, so Joey Carbery slots into fullback.

TRY – Ireland 34 Argentina 7 (Van der Flier, 57mins)

59mins: Ireland 34 Argentina 7

Those substitutions have injected a bit of impetus into Ireland’s play, but again it’s a try from the forwards. Van der Flier has his second of the afternoon as he muscles over from close range.

Cian Healy is in for Andrew Porter, and Tom O’Toole has replaced Tadhg Furlong.

RED CARD: Lavanini, 60mins

61mins: Ireland 34 Argentina 7

Argentina lock Tomas Lavanini red-carded for a dangerous hit on Cian Healy. No arguing with that one. Safe to say Peter O’Mahony was not impressed…

66mins: Ireland 34 Argentina 7

Cian Healy think he has try number five for Ireland, but the replays show the ball was ripped out of his hands, so the try is crossed off. Keith Earls is in for Robbie Henshaw.

TRY – Ireland 41 Argentina 7 (Sheehan, 67mins)

69mins: Ireland 41 Argentina 7

Dan Sheehan scores Ireland’s fifth try, applying the finishing touch off a strong close-range lineout maul. Carbery then does really well to clip over the conversion from the sideline – his place kicking has been excellent today.

TRY – Ireland 48 Argentina 7 (Healy, 73mins)

75mins: Ireland 48 Argentina 7

Healy gets his try, and it’s a move we’ve seen time and time again this afternoon as the prop uses his strength to cross from close range. Carbery adds the extras. Ireland have been so dominant up front today.

TRY – Ireland 53 Argentina 7 (Beirne, 76mins)

78mins: Ireland 53 Argentina 7

This is all so easy for Ireland now as Tadhg Beirne adds another try from close range. Carbery’s conversion strikes the post – a rare blemish on an impressive outing for the Munster player.

FULL-TIME: Ireland 53 Argentina 7

So, another big win for Ireland to end their 2021 season on a high. This wasn’t as pretty as the performances against Japan and New Zealand, but nobody will complain when you stick 50 points on the Pumas.

Ireland showed power and composure in what was a clinical performance, which once again highlighted the strength of options across the Ireland pack.

Thanks for joining our liveblog today, we’ll have all the reaction from the Aviva Stadium on site shortly.
