A goalkeeping howler and a Hulk special couldn't stop Sevilla tonight

Here’s how tonight’s European quarter-finals went down.

Zenit 2 Sevilla 2 (3-4)

AN EARLY CARLOS Bacca penalty looked like it would give Sevilla safe passage in this Europa League quarter-final second leg, a vital away goal to add to their aggregate 1 – 2 lead going in to the tie.

However, in the second half goalkeeper Belo almost single handedly offered Zenit a lifeline in the tie.

On 48 minutes he helpfully batted this cross down in to the path of Rondon, who equalised and made the aggregate score 2 -3.

With 18 minutes remaining Hulk levelled the tie on aggregate with a shot from way downtown that sneaked over the line after hitting the underside of the bar – Belo didn’t cover himself in glory here either though.

The game looked bound for extra-time, but Sevilla struck back to save their goalkeeper’s blushes, Kevin Gameiro rifling an 85th minute strike past Lodygin to send the Spanish side in to the semi-finals.

Dnipro 1 Clube Brugge 0 (1 – 0)

Yevhen Shakhov’s late strike broke the deadlock in this tense quarter-final after 171 long minutes.

Shakhov raced on to a fine through ball from Ruslan Rotan on 81 minutes and picked a left foot finish past Matt Ryan in the Brugge goal.

Napoli 2 Wolfsburg 2 (6 – 3)

Wolfsburg clawed back from pride after their 4 – 1 home defeat in the first leg with a 2-2 draw in Italy.

The pride was late coming however as Napoli struck twice after half-time through Jose Callejon and Dries Mertens to end the contest on an aggregate of 6-1.

The German side hit back with two goals in as many minutes, Timm Klose heading in a Maximilian Arnold cross on 71 before Ivan Perisic equalised on the night with another header, this time to the top corner.

Fiorentina 1 Dynamo Kiev 0 (2 -1)

Mario Gomez ‘ first half strike was enough to send La Viola through to the final four as they overcame Dynamo Kiev with a 2-1 aggregate win.

Gomez powered in the game’s only goal into the bottom left corner just minutes before the break. Though the lead was narrow, it was a hammer blow for Kiev who were still reeling form the dismissal of Jeremain Lens for a second bookable offence.

With a goal and a man advantage, the Serie A side were able to hold off their opponents and see out the 90 minutes.
