Hawkeye will make its Semple Stadium debut in three weeks' time

The system will be used for the Cork-Tipperary Munster SHC preliminary round clash in Thurles.

SEMPLE STADIUM WILL use Hawkeye for the first time in the Munster SHC preliminary round meeting of Tipperary and Cork on May 22, the GAA has confirmed.

It’s the first time the score detection technology will be used in an official capacity for a GAA game outside of Croke Park.

Hawkeye was successfully trialed during Tipperary’s home Allianz Hurling League games, Na Piarsaigh v Oulart-the-Ballagh in the All-Ireland club SHC semi-final and the Allianz Hurling League semi-finals.

While the big screen in Croke Park indicates whether a ball has gone wide or over, in Thurles it’s probable the referee will signify if a scoring attempt will count or not, similar to the system used in rugby.

It’s possible a large mobile screen will be rolled out for the game, but that appears unlikely.

Hawkeye is arriving to Semple a year later than anticipated because of some teething problems.
