GSP believes Anderson Silva's failed drug test 'is just the tip of the iceberg' for the UFC

The UFC’s former welterweight champion isn’t surprised by MMA’s current PED problems.

IF YOU’VE BEEN counting on a return to the Octagon for Georges St-Pierre any time soon, it looks like you’ll be disappointed.

The legendary former UFC welterweight champion says he won’t be competing while MMA’s problems with performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) persist.

Although he never officially retired, St-Pierre vacated his UFC title in December 2013 when he announced his decision to take a break from competition.

St. Pierre recently resumed training after undergoing surgery on another ACL knee injury last year, but he told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour that he’s not planning on making an imminent return — despite being offered a long-rumoured ‘super fight’ with Anderson Silva.

“I am not interested to compete if the sport is not clean. That is one of my major concerns,” said St-Pierre, who has long been a vocal critic of PED-use in mixed martial arts.

Anderson Silva, the former UFC middleweight champion, is currently serving a temporary suspension after failing an out-of-competition drug test taken in the build-up to his recent win over Nick Diaz.

“A fight versus Anderson wouldn’t interest me,” St-Pierre said. “I never said never, but now is not the time for me. I am not interested right now. The way everything goes, I’m not interested right now.

“I don’t like to kick Anderson when he’s down. I just wish Anderson didn’t do that. But I think this is just the tip of the iceberg and a lot of people are going to get caught. It’s a big problem and we need to figure out what we need to do.”

Many were surprised that the growing drug culture in MMA extended to an iconic figure like Anderson Silva, but St-Pierre wasn’t one of them.

He said: “I knew. I knew for a long time and it bothered me. It’s not a secret and people know it’s a big problem. I’m not surprised guys got busted. There is going to be other names coming up.

“I am not a rat, I won’t say any names. I just wanted to change the system. It shows now that we’ve got a big problem and they need to do something. There is a lot to be cleaned up. This is only the beginning.”
