Maher played at right half-forward on the Mayo side that contested that decider in 1989 when they were defeated by Cork by 0-17 to 1-11.

The Claremorris native was joined in that team by his brother Sean at midfield but they lost out by three points in their efforts to land Sam Maguire.

Four years previously, Greg had won an All-Ireland minor football medal with Mayo when they won the 1985 final against Cork by 3-3 to 0-9.

At the 2013 Connacht final in MacHale Park, Greg was one of the players honoured as the Mayo team that won the 1988 and 1989 Connacht senior football titles were presented before the crowd.
