Irishman's extra-time goal seals a dream FA Cup tie at Anfield for League 2 side

Plymouth Argyle will now travel to take on Liverpool in the third round on 8 January.

GRAHAM CAREY NETTED an extra-time penalty last night to secure an FA Cup third-round trip to Liverpool for Plymouth Argyle.

The League Two leaders wasted a host of chances against Newport County in their second-round replay before the Irish midfielder stepped up to convert from 12 yards.

Poor finishing let both sides down, but Plymouth had a golden chance to take the lead in extra-time as substitute Paul Garita hit the post from the penalty spot.

But the Pilgrims made no mistake when they were awarded their second spot-kick of the night as Carey slammed past Newport goalkeeper Joe Day.

Carey, a 27-year-old Dubliner who has represented Ireland at U21 level, began his career at Shelbourne before moving to Celtic. He returned to Ireland in 2009 for a loan spell with Bohemians.
