MICHAEL D. MCANDREW and former Mayo player Martin Carney were in the commentary box for Mid-West Radio at Croke Park yesterday.
And it’s not difficult to see where their allegiances lie as Bryan Sheehan stands over the late free that could have snatched victory for Kerry in a gripping All-Ireland semi-final.
McAndrew sums up the tension of an entire county as he describes the closing seconds of the game, puffing his cheeks out and barely able to watch as Sheehan goes through his pre-kick routine.
What follows is sheer relief from McAndrew, as Sheehan’s effort tails off-target before being plucked from the skies by Aidan O’Shea.
“Kerry, to win it, with Bryan Sheehan,” McAndrew gasps.
“Sheehan…yes, it’s going wide! Go wide, go wide! No, a Mayo man gets it, it’s still in play!
“Back there is Aidan O’Shea. It’s all over!”
And we’ll do it all over again next Saturday, with a 3pm throw-in for the replay at Croke Park:
