Dublin's 2010 All-Ireland winning manager appointed as Tipperary supremo

Gerry McGill is the new man in charge of the Premier County’s intermediate ladies footballers.

THE MAN WHO guided Dublin to their one and only TG4 All-Ireland ladies senior football title has taken over Tipperary’s intermediates.

Gerry McGill succeeds John Leahy in the post following his ratification by Tipperary ladies football board officials.

McGill led Dublin to All-Ireland senior finals in 2009 and 2010, suffering defeat to Cork at the first time of asking before defeating Tyrone a year later.

McGill was then a selector and coach with the Tipperary senior footballers alongside former manager Peter Creedon in 2012 and 2013.

The Donegal native also worked with the Tipperary U21 footballers in 2013 and 2014 and when the county’s intermediate ladies football team competed in the All-Ireland final two years ago, McGill was on board in an advisory role.

McGill is working locally as principal of Scoil Ruain in Killenaule and recently, he was in goal for Annanough in their Laois intermediate football final defeat to Clonaslee.

Leahy stepped down as manager in August after two unsuccessful years in charge.

The former Premier County hurling star was unveiled in a blaze of publicity but created a storm when he axed five players from his squad last year – including O’Connor Cup winner Jennifer Grant and Mairead Morrissey, who was an Allstar nominee from the previous season.

Tipp contested the 2013 All-Ireland intermediate final, losing to Cavan, but have come nowhere near those heights since, bowing out of the Munster and All-Ireland campaigns in tame fashion this summer.
