World's leading long jumper could miss Olympics after tearing ligament while filming an ad

Sosthene Moguenara set a season’s best 7.16 metres on Saturday, but will need a speedy recovery to hit that mark again anytime soon.

AN ANKLE INJURY suffered while shooting a television commercial threatens to end the Rio Olympics dream of Germany’s long-jump hopeful Sosthene Moguenara.

The 26-year-old leapt 7.16m last Saturday, the longest jump in the world this season. But her hopes of competing at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, from August 5 to 21, are in the balance after twisting her ankle while filming an advert for the 2018 European Championships, to be held in Berlin.

A scan has revealed torn ligaments in the foot she uses to take off and she faces an anxious wait to be fit for Rio.

“I had been really pleased about the shoot, I really liked the concept of the film and my role in it,” she told German daily Bild.

“Unfortunately, something happened which shouldn’t be allowed to happen, but can happen.”

Germany’s head coach Ulrich Knapp is sceptical whether Moguenara will be fit.

“I have the hope that she will be back on her feet for Rio, but it’s a torn ligament,” he said.
