'Tis after spiralling away on the interweb' - O'Donovan brothers on that RTÉ interview

The O’Donovan brothers were a little surprised at the reaction to their post-race Olympic interview.

THE O’DONOVAN BROTHERS from West Cork stormed into the final of the Olympic men’s lightweight double sculls today when they finished third in their semi-final.

It continues a brilliant week for the Skibbereen duo – Gary and Paul – after they finished first in the opening race in the rowing in Rio de Janeiro on Monday.

They can get set now for tomorrow afternoon’s final but the brothers were a little surprised that their post-race interview to RTÉ on Monday proved so endearing to the nation.

“Chrisht, that interview went out of hand there,” stated Paul after today’s race.

“We didn’t think that would happen at all. We walked away thinking that was grand like, three of four questions.

“Tis after spiralling away on the interweb and everyone was talking about it then.”

“Tis good publicity anyway,” remarked Gary.

Still they’ve no qualms about being in the spotlight as they prepare for a tilt at an Olympic medal at the Lagoa Stadium tomorrow.

“But tis all great anyway,” said Paul

“We love the sport of rowing and would do anything we can to promote it and represent and we are delighted we can be good ambassadors for the sport.

“Not just for Skibbereen but for the sport as a whole and it’s a huge honour.”
