Gary Neville tells Luke Shaw what he must do to survive at Man Utd

The former United captain feels Shaw must “mature physically and mentally.”

GARY NEVILLE HAS told Luke Shaw that he must “mature physically and mentally” to have a future at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.

Shaw and defensive partner Chris Smalling were absent from Sunday’s 3-1 win over Swansea City, with both informing Mourinho they were not fit enough to play and their manager added afterward that his squad must “put their bodies on the line”.

Mourinho’s singling out of his players has drawn criticism, most recently from PFA chief Gordon Taylor, and now Neville has warned Shaw that he must be ready to deal with expectations and earn his manager’s trust.

“I think Luke is a complex character. He is young, has moved away from Southampton, and he needs to mature physically and mentally.

“He is such a huge talent but obviously has had injury problems and is not over them from a mental point of view and he needs to work on that.

“He is a young person with big expectation, but he is now in the spotlight at a big club, and Manchester United doesn’t take prisoners.”
