ON THE DAY that they were drawn against Legia Warsaw in the Champions League play-off reigning SSE Airtricity League Premier Division champions Dundalk were brought crashing back to earth away to Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park.
It has been the biggest week in the history of the club, one where they shocked Champions League regulars BATE Borisov at Tallaght Stadium, and now they look set for the most lucrative payday in the history of Irish club football against Polish giants Legia.
Stephen Kenny’s side were 1-0 down at half-time after Vinny Faherty’s goal just before the break – that was his 11th goal of the season — and just could not get back in contention.
Dundalk dominated the opening half-hour, and they began brilliantly with chances for Darren Meenan and Dane Massey inside ten minutes.

Meenan’s free-kick was tipped away by Conor Winn and Massey had his chance cleared after Ciaran Kilduff had a free header.
But Galway began to grow in confidence while they kept Dundalk at bay, and Chris Shields had to get a last ditch clearance in ahead of the on-rushing Faherty. Kilduff almost got to a Patrick McEleney delivery after 35 minutes but that was also put safe by the Galway defence.

Stephen Folan had a great opportunity to give Galway the lead with four minutes left in the half, but his volley went just over Gary Rogers’ crossbar. And Galway struck moments before the half-time interval.
Paul Sinnott spurned an open goal chance when he couldn’t get to the ball, but it was swept back in by Stephen Walsh and Faherty headed home the lead goal.
Galway held their composure after half-time and even with the Champions League’s top goal-scorer Dave McMillan being introduced Dundalk could not find an equaliser.
GALWAY UNITED: Conor Winn; Colm Horgan, Armin Aganovic, Stephen Folan, Stephen Walsh; Gary Shanahan, Alex Byrne (Jose Garcia, 69), Ryan Connolly, Paul Sinnott, Kevin Devaney (Marc Ludden, 83); Vinny Faherty (Enda Curran, 75).
DUNDALK: Gary Rogers; Sean Gannon, Andy Boyle, Paddy Barrett, Dane Massey; Darren Meenan (John Mountney, 76), Chris Shields (Stephen O’Donnell, 62), Robbie Benson, Daryl Horgan; Patrick McEleney (David McMillan, 58); Ciaran Kilduff.
