GALWAY ADVANCED TO an All-Ireland senior hurling final on 3 September, following a gripping semi-final clash with Tipperary at Croke Park yesterday.
And for his exploits at centre half-back, a performance that nullified the influence of Tipp’s Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher, Galway man-mountain Gearóid McInerney earned the man-of-the-match award.
The centre back position has been a problem area for Galway in recent times, arguably back to the days of the great Tony Keady, but McInerney has grown into a colossal figure in the role in a relatively short period of time.
McInerney got the nod over Galway team-mate and forward Conor Whelan, with Tipp captain Pádraic Maher also nominated:
McInerney was the choice of The Sunday Game panel but do you agree, or do you think another player should have got the nod?

One of the most underrated Kerry players in the last few years. Absolute workhorse and did so much for the team.
Along with Maher he was one of my favourite Kerry players. A workhorse who got very little recognition for the work he did. A legend in his own right. Happy retirement!
@Sam Walsh: He was one i always feared when watching Dubs V Kerry ( Come to think of it we feared every kerry player ) however he had that great ability to time his runs to perfection and ghost into positions. Class player.
He was a great footballer and didn’t get enough credit the game could use a few more like him. From a corkman congrats on a great career and enjoy retirement
very under rated player.Gave his all at all times.Great engine getting up n down the field. Thanks Donnacha.
