Good news for players as GAA and GPA announce new agreement worth an annual €6.2 million

The announcement was made at a press conference today in Croke Park.

THE GAA AND the GPA have announced a new agreement worth an annual €6.2 million at a press conference this afternoon at Croke Park.

The previous deal between the GAA and the official players’ body was announced in 2011 and that five-year agreement ended at the close of last year.

A temporary arrangement had been in place to date in 2016 until as such time as the new agreement is hammered out.

It means that the GAA will now be giving 11% of their total revenues – which were €55.7 million in 2015 – towards player welfare and expenses.

The breakdown of the total €6.2 million figure is as follows:

  • Mileage Rate – Increase for inter county players to between 62.5 cent and 65 cent per mile to a maximum total cost of €1.5 million.
  • Nutrition Expense – New refundable & vouched nutrition expense (to the amount of €1.2 million) to be introduced.
  • €200,000 to be set aside each year to deal specifically with surgical interventions for former inter county players.
  • GAA to provide €2.5 million or 15% of net commercial revenue (whichever is higher) in each of the three years of the agreement.
  • The commercial partnership Le Chéile is to be revamped with the GAA to guarantee €800,000 per annum from it to GPA for Player Services.

A significant feature of the new agreement will see the mileage allowance for inter-county players increased from the current 50 cent per mile figure, which was established in 2001 by a GAA players committee that was spearheaded by ex-Armagh player Jarlath Burns.

The negotiating teams were:

  • GAA: Fergal McCormack, John Horan, Liam Keane and Feargal McGill.
  • GPA: Dermot Earley, Séamus Hickey, Richie Hogan, Paul Flynn, Aidan Gordon and Aaron Shearer.

The GPA are also set to get enhanced input into policy decisions. This will include:

  1. An additional GPA delegate to Congress along with Árd Chomhairle Rep
  2. The GPA will have the right to submit one motion to Congress annually in line with other units.
  3. The creation of a policy forum to discuss issues of concern and relevance to the GPA
