FIONNUALA MCCORMACK FELL just short of winning Ireland’s first medal at the European Athletics Championships with a valiant performance in the women’s 10,000m final this evening.

Tara Jameson, another Wicklow woman, finished 14th in a race won by Turkey’s Kenyan-born athlete Yasemin Can in 31:12.86.

Felix Dulce of Portugal was second while Denmark’s Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal came home in third.

Earlier in the session, Thomas Barr continued his recovery from injury with an impressive performance to qualify from his heats in the 400m hurdles.

The Ferrybank AC athlete comfortably won his heat in Amesterdam by recording a season’s best of 50.17 seconds to qualify for the semi-finals.

In the same event, there wasn’t any luck for Paul Byrne as he failed to make it out of the heats, finishing fourth in a time of 53.12.

On her major championship debut, Siofra Cleirigh-Buttner conjured an encouraged run but it wasn’t enough for her to progress into the 800m semi-finals.

Similarly, there was disappointment for Tomas Cotter in the  3,000m steeplechase.
