Finn Harps and Derry City to play friendly to raise funds for north-west flood victims

Almost 50 families in the region were left homeless following last week’s flash floods.

FINN HARPS AND Derry City will play a friendly in order to raise funds for the victims of last week’s flash floods in the north-west.

In Inishowen and large parts of Derry, roads and bridges were left in ruin, cars were washed away, and homes and businesses were destroyed during heavy storms last Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Almost 50 families were left homeless following the flooding which laid waste to vast areas, with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar adding upon his visit, “You have to see it to understand the scale of the damage that has been done.”

Derry City and Strabane District Council received 560 requests for assistance, with assessors understood to have now visited the vast majority of all affected properties.

Chris McNulty of Donegal Sport Hub and Donegal Daily reports that the region’s League of Ireland clubs, Finn Harps and Derry City, will play a fundraising friendly at Buncrana’s Maginn Park on Friday week (8 September), with kick-off set for 7:45pm.

All funds raised on the evening will go towards victims of last week’s floods.

The sides last clashed five weeks ago, with Derry emerging victorious in the derby at Finn Park thanks to late goals from Darren Cole and Aaron McEneff.
