THERE WERE SOME harrowing scenes tonight as Atletico Madrid’s Fernando Torres was rushed to hospital after an on-field collision during his side’s La Liga game with Deportivo la Coruna.
The incident happened in the 85th-minute when Torres – who came on as a substitute 20 minutes earlier – jumped to clear a ball and was clattered from behind by Alex Bergantinos. The impact sent the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker sprawling to the ground, where his head crashed violently against the turf.
Players from both teams were instantly aware of the severity of the situation and gestured for medics to enter the field immediately. Some Atleti players – namely Jose Gimenez – were visibly upset.
Thanks for the messages of support for @Torres. He’s stable and conscious. He’ll spend the night in hospital and undergo more tests tomorrow
