WITH A SURNAME like Asprilla, you have a lot to live up to.

Despite lots of talk of him being related, it turns out that Dairon Asprilla is not the son of former Newcastle striker Faustino.

Still, the young Colombian can play a bit.

He plays for Major League Soccer outfit the Portland Timbers and they had a crucial game last night in the Western Conference final first-leg against FC Dallas – essentially the championship semi-final.

The Timbers won 3-1, with former Aston Villa and Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell popping up with their first goal.

But, it was Asprilla who received the post-match plaudits.

He doubled Portland’s advantage shortly after the restart when he conjured one of the strikes of the MLS season, beautifully arcing a right-foot shot to the top corner.
