FAI shredded match programmes to remove Delaney comments on Fifa

Delaney ‘entirely unaware’ of decision, which is understood to have cost almost €7k.

THE FAI MADE a last-minute decision to shred the original matchday programme for today’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland due to comments made in CEO John Delaney’s programme notes.

The Irish Daily Mail first reported that Delaney had made allegations of corruption against Fifa and that 18,000 programmes were reprinted without Delaney’s original comments.

An FAI source told The42 that the cost of the hastily reprinted programmes was €6,700, rather than the €10,000 initially reported.

In a statement, the FAI underlined that Delaney was unaware that the programme had been amended, saying that it was an editorial decision made in the days leading up to the vital qualifying fixture.

“John Delaney was entirely unaware of this change to the programme. He had already signed off on it and it was approved for printing.

“The decision to delete his comments where they related to FIFA was an editorial one that was taken by the communications team.”
