Walker missed out initially because of injury.

Injured player called-up to the Welsh squad to replace injured Liam Williams

Eli Walker isn’t fit enough to play after replacing Liam Williams.

FROM HENCEFORTH, ALL injury crises will be measured on this.

With Liam Williams ruled out for the rest of the World Cup with a foot injury, Warren Gatland has called-up the Ospreys’ Eli Walker to his squad.

However, a hamstring injury picked up before the tournament means that Walker will only be available for the Welsh if they make it past South Africa this weekend and into the semi-final.

Walker had initially been included in Warren Gatland’s 31-man squad before pulling out with a hamstring injury.

However, because he was ruled out before the squad was officially submitted to World Rugby, Walker has now been brought back into the set-up to replace Williams.

But Welsh coach Rob Howley said this morning that because the player is only back from his recent hamstring injury, he is not fit enough to be considered for selection this weekend against South Africa.

“He’ not available for selection this weekend. He’s just got over his injury. He’d be available for a semi-final.

“With the injuries we have had like Liam Willliams, wing might be a position we might need over the next weekend.”

It’s expected that George North will return to the wing this weekend after playing in the centre against Australia, while in a rare piece of positive injury news for the Welsh, Jamie Roberts has been passed fit to take on the Boks.
