Having retired in 2011 following Manchester United’s 3-1 Champions League final defeat to Barcelona at Wembley, he was coaxed back by his first senior club – VV Noordwijk – after their first-choice goalkeeper was injured.

After the Dutch FA sanctioned the arrangement, van der Sar turned up for the team’s fourth-tier game against Jodan Boys yesterday and, inevitably, stole the show.
He pulled off an excellent penalty save – using his experience to play some mind games with the kick-taker – and it proved crucial as his team managed a 1-1 draw.
