Earls a doubt for Munster's trip to Leicester as Rassie mulls Taute issue

The South African is looking forward to coaching Francis Saili into his back-line.

RASSIE ERASMUS HAS concerns over the availability of Keith Earls for the weekend, but Jaco Taute can’t be far from his mind either.

A decision as to whether or not he’ll risk Earls and his groin injury will be left until late this week, but the coach has confirmed Taute’s future will be up for discussion on Sunday after their return clash with Leicester Tigers.

A key factor in discussions will be Francis Saili, who is due back from a lengthy injury lay-off at the end of the month, and his contract with the province is due to expire at the end of the season.

The Munster boss insists that there has been no talks with the IRFU regarding Taute’s future, but the province are clearly readying a case to put before IRFU performance director, David Nucifora.

“We haven’t discussed it even with the IRFU, we’ll give it until after this weekend,” said Erasmus.

“He’ll be keen to stay, he really enjoys it, I think he slotted in well, him and the players enjoy one another, he’s liking the whole set up, so I think he would like to stay.

“If it’s allowed and fits in, it might be until the end of the season, if we look long term, we can’t make that decision today, it will be Monday or Tuesday.”

The South African centre was only signed as cover when Saili experienced complications with his shoulder injury. The All Black has yet to play for new coach Erasmus, and he admits that thought excites him.

Retaining the services of both centres may be difficult for Munster going by Ulster’s recent failure to retain Ruan Pienaar, but Erasmus perhaps spots some wriggle room can be found.

“You see, that’s the tough thing that we must now make the calls after this weekend. There are so many things that fit in, you know, they can play in different positions as well, so we’ll have to make sure.

“There’s so many things you must think about when you must make these decisions, so I don’t want to stick my neck out there and then on Sunday we go through it as a coaching team and we say: ‘hey guys, this is not a realistic option’. So we’ll take our time when we make those decisions.

“Francis has been in great form, I haven’t coached him into, during or after a match, but he’s one of the reasons when I looked at the squad before I came here, and I looked at the players, and thought: ‘do I have the players?’

“He was one of the guys that I’d coached against for the Blues, he’s a fantastic player, totally different to Jaco, and I can’t wait to get him back on the park.”

Before any of those talks are thrashed out, Munster will hope to claim a second win in a week against Leicester Tigers in the Champions Cup.

A third win from three will leave Munster well placed in Pool 1, and heading to Welford Road on the back of a 38-0 win at Thomond Park is a good place to be for Erasmus, but he is sweating over the fitness of Keith Earls.

“It’s just Keith Earls has a little bit of a groin at this stage, we’ll give him some proper stage until Friday, but I think he’ll be good to go.

“If it was a semi-final this weekend we would definitely play him but let’s just see. We’ve got Ronan O’Mahony, who’s really been playing well and who’s fit to play if we needed him.

“Andrew Conway can slot in on the wing as well so we wouldn’t risk him at this stage but if he’s fit by Friday he’ll definitely play.”

Are the All Blacks that good or are Australia just really bad?

@Harry O’Callaghan: Very difficult to tell and was asking the same question to myself watching the game. All Blacks had moments of undoubted class but some of the Australian play was schoolboy stuff.

Australia are putting together a serious bid for that one….blooded debutant, inexperienced youngsters and I believe will continue to do so. 20 – 22 yr old will be just in their prime then. You can expect a few scores like that I think. However, a serious coach and

@Harry O’Callaghan: far too young a squad to face the ABs. They might have had some chance if o Connor or tomua were there, but as it was they were lacking guile and leadership in every facet of the game.

Australia were shocking bad in the first half. Hoofing the ball for no reason was initial tactic. Couldn’t get more than a few phases without knocking on or giving possession away. Dont think the AB’s broke a sweat.

Australia wants to join the Six Nations – to have a chance of winning some of the games against Italy. I think we know why South Africa wants to join the Six Nations.
