As it happened: Dublin vs Tipperary, Allianz Hurling League Quarter-Final

Dublin took on Tipperary in the Allianz National Hurling League quarter-final in part one of a double-header at Croke Park.

Good afternoon and welcome to our coverage of today’s Allianz National Hurling League quarter-final between Dublin and Tipperary at Croke Park.

A steadily improving Dublin side take on an ever-improving Tipperary, as Pat Gilroy’s charges look to put the haunting memory of that opening weekend defeat to Offaly behind them en route to a potential semi-final.

It will be a daunting test against Michael Ryan’s side, who have won three from five, beating Wexford, Waterford and Cork ahead of today’s meeting at HQ.

Let’s get started with the team news.

Dublin:

1. Alan Nolan

2. Paddy Smyth
3. Bill O’Carroll
4. Eoghan O’Donnell

5. Shane Barrett
6. Chris Crummey
7. James Madden

8. Rian McBride
9. Fiontán McGibb

10. Donal Burke
11. Conal Keaney
12. Danny Sutcliffe

13. Ronan Hayes
14. Ryan O’Dwyer
15. Paul Winters

Tipperary:

1. Brian Hogan

2. Alan Flynn
3. James Barry
4. Michael Cahill

5. Barry Heffernan
6. Padraic Maher
7. Paudie Feehan

8. Séamus Kennedy
9. Ronan Maher

10. Seán Curran
11. Bill McCarthy
12. John McGrath

13. Michael Breen
14. Jason Forde
15. Cian Darcy

It seems that more pressure will be on the shoulders of Tipperary this afternoon. Their season fell apart in 2017 when a league final defeat to Galway was followed by a Munster quarter-final exit to Cork and an All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Galway again.

Dublin got off to the worst possible start this year with that deflating defeat to Offaly, but have impressed during wins over Laois and Antrim, on top of a narrow three point defeat to the All-Ireland champions on 25 February.

Who’s your fancy? Let us know.

Dublin 0-10 Tipperary 0-4

13 mins — Two points in quick succession for Tipperary and the second is an absolute peach from Darcy.

Dublin 0-10 Tipperary 0-5

14 mins — Tipperary have halved the deficit with another fine score, this time from Sean Curran. Dublin’s early dominance has temporarily subsided as the game opens up and becomes a bit more even-ended.

Dublin 0-11 Tipperary 0-7

18 mins — Both teams enjoy a breath of air to fill their lungs, as the scoring subsides for a moment. But it’s only a moment as John McGrath knocks one over for Tipp before Danny Sutcliffe responds in kind. And then another for Séamus Kennedy and there’s four points in it.

Dublin 0-11 Tipperary 0-8

18 mins — Tipp really rallying here as Sean Curran knocks over his second score of the afternoon, cutting the difference to within a single score beneath the crossbar. Shane Barrett is shown a yellow card for a rash challenge on the neck of John McGrath.

Dublin 0-11 Tipperary 0-9

Dublin 0-11 Tipperary 0-11

23 mins — Tipperary are level for the first time this afternoon. Alan Nolan was forced to come from his goal to sweep up possession, however the goalkeeper’s pass only found its way into the hands of Séamus Kennedy, who points from close to the touchline. That was followed by another free from Jason Forde to bring it all square.

Dublin 0-12 Tipperary 0-11

25 mins — Dublin stem the tide and regain their lead following a prolonged period of being forced back into their own half. Donal Burke is the man who knocks over the free, scooping the ball up and knocking it over with no airs or graces. One point game again.

GOAL! JOHN MCGRATH SCORES FOR TIPPERARY

Dublin 0-12 Tipperary 1-11

25 mins — What a finish from John McGrath! He steals possession with the tip of his hurl before bearing down on goal towards the box. Ten metres out he picks his spot and fires a low shot past Alan Nolan and into the back of the net. Tipp take the lead for the first time this afternoon.

Dublin 0-12 Tipperary 1-11

28 mins — Danny Sutcliffe is shown a yellow card for Dublin.

Dublin 0-12 Tipperary 1-12

32 mins — Michael Ryan’s side have well and truly taken this game the scruff of the neck. A fine score from half-back Shane Barrett extends his side’s lead to three points. He came far to cover the distance, but made sure of the finish with a pinpoint strike.

Dublin 0-12 Tipperary 1-13

33 mins — Another for the visitors to the capital and they are really finding their groove right before the interval now. Jason Forde strikes again and it’s another fine free which flies over.

Dublin 0-12 Tipperary 1-14

35 mins — And another. Dublin have little response to this current tide. It’s been almost ten minutes since the boys in blue have gotten on the scoresheet. At the other end, Ronan Maher beats his man to the ball and fires over.

Dublin 0-14 Tipperary 1-15

35 mins — Gilroy’s men have found their scoring streak again. Fiontán McGibb with the point, before another for Ryan O’Dwyer for Tipp.

RED CARD! RONAN MAHER IS SENT OFF FOR TIPPERARY

Dublin 0-14 Tipperary 1-15

36 mins — Ronan Maher is sent off right at the end of the first half. He wraps his arm around Ryan Dwyer’s neck and is given his marching orders.

HALF-TIME: DUBLIN 0-14 TIPPERARY 1-15

A dramatic end to the first half sees Ronan Maher sent off for a second yellow card. It was silly more than anything else, however the referee will also state it was dangerous play to go anywhere near a player’s neck, as he did with Ryan O’Dwyer.

Dublin began like lightening, going into an early eight point lead before many fans had even taken their seats. Tipp rallied though, and didn’t let the heads drop, with John McGrath’s brilliant goal was the pick of the lot.

Dublin 0-15 Tipperary 1-17

43 mins — A couple of wides in succession for Dublin, before Ryan O’Dwyer goes down injured. He receives medical attention after colliding into the side of Padraic Maher — there was no malice involved from either player, however the Dublin full-forward took a nasty knock and is replaced by Paul Ryan.

Dublin 0-15 Tipperary 1-19

46 mins — Now, then. Two scores in-a-row for Tipp thanks to Jason Forde and, well, Jason Forde again.

50 mins — Padraic Maher responds in kind with a point for Tipp. He is found with plenty of space around him before plucking the ball from the air and  striking from the half-way line and over.

GOAL! MICHAEL BREEN SCORES FOR TIPPERARY

Dublin 0-16 Tipperary 2-20

54 mins — Tipperary are running away with this now. Michael Breen wanders into space, dummies inside to take the ball onto his left and strikes the ball with a short stick past Alan Nolan and into the back of the net. Ten points in it now, as Pat Gilroy replaces Paul Winters with Cillian Costello.

Dublin 0-17 Tipperary 2-20

59 mins — Wides at both ends now as the game slows down just a knot. Goalscorer John McGrath goes down and requires some medical treatment, but he seems to be okay now. Meanwhile Donal Burke tips over a free after Barry Heffernan was called up for a sloppy foul just outside the box. Nine point game.

Dublin 0-18 Tipperary 2-20

62 mins — A second score in a row for Dublin, who are beginning to find their feet again. They have been far and away from the all-beating side they were inside the opening 15 minutes, but haven’t given up hope here just yet. Conal Keaney with the score.

Dublin 0-19 Tipperary 2-21

65 mins — Jason Forde gets on the end of a Billy McCarthy pass and knocks the ball between the posts. At the other end Keaney adds another as his side rage against the dying of the light with time running out. Eight points in it now.

Dublin 0-19 Tipperary 2-23

67 mins — Another for Tipp as they begin to relax and take their scores with pressure easing off. Bubbles O’Dwyer is on off the bench and makes an immediate impact with a score. That’s followed by another Forde free.

Dublin 0-19 Tipperary 2-24

69 mins — Bubbles receives a massive chorus of applause from the travelling Tipp fans as he caresses a stunning point over — his second of the afternoon in as many minutes.

Dublin 0-19 Tipperary 2-24

70 mins — There will be five minutes of stoppage time to come, as Donal Burke swings a free wide to his visible disappointment. The game really just got away from Dublin as it wore on after that lightening start.

Dublin 0-19 Tipperary 2-25

73 mins — A foul on McGrath while competing for a high ball sees Tipp earn a free from 30 metres out. Forde knocks it over and there’s 12 points in it now with a few minutes to go.

Dublin 0-20 Tipperary 2-25

75 mins — A late final score for Dublin courtesy of Donal Burke cuts the deficit to 11 points. That should be that.
