As it happened: Dublin v Mayo, All-Ireland senior football final

Will Dublin capture the three-in-a-row, or will Mayo finally end the famine?

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the biggest day in the gaelic football calendar โ€“ the All-Ireland SFC final.

And once again, itโ€™s Dublin and Mayo who will battle it out for Sam Maguire.

Mayo come into this game on the back of a somewhat turbulent championship campaign, while Jim Gavinโ€™s Dublin are seeking their third consecutive All-Ireland title.
Weโ€™re less an hour away from throw-in, and weโ€™ll be gradually building up to the game with some team news, as well as some feature articles by some of our writers at The42 previewing the game.

The team-line ups that have been announced:

Mayo

1. David Clarke (Ballina Stephenites)

2. Brendan Harrison (Aghamore)
3. Donal Vaughan (Ballinrobe)
4. Keith Higgins (Ballyhaunis)

11. Aidan Oโ€™Shea (Breaffy)
12. Diarmuid Oโ€™Connor (Ballintubber)

13. Jason Doherty (Burrishoole)
14. Cillian Oโ€™Connor (Ballintubber โ€“ captain)
15. Andy Moran (Ballaghaderreen)

Dublin

1. Stephen Cluxton (Parnells)

2. Philly McMahon (Ballymun Kickhams)
3. Cian Oโ€™Sullivan (Kilmacud Crokes)
4. Michael Fitzsimons (Cuala)

5. Jonny Cooper (Na Fianna)
6. John Small (Ballymun Kickhams)
7. Jack McCaffrey (Clontarf)

8. Brian Fenton (Raheny)
9. James McCarthy (Ballymun Kickhams)

10. Ciarรกn Kilkenny (Castleknock)
11. Con Oโ€™Callaghan (Cuala)
12. Niall Scully (Templeogue)

13. Paul Mannion (Kilmacud Crokes)
14. Paddy Andrews (St Brigidโ€™s)
15. Dean Rock (Ballymun Kickhams)

To get you started, here is Billy Joe Paddenโ€™s take on Mayoโ€™s chances of ending the 66-year wait for Sam Maguire.

Speaking on The42โ€ฒs Close Calls, he said:

โ€œI think theyโ€™ve learned an awful lot and I think theyโ€™re ahead of the curve in terms of how teams should play against Dublin,โ€ said Padden, a three-time Connacht title winner.

โ€œI think theyโ€™re ready for the sort of mental task that it is because you have to be alert and aggressive and totally focused for the full 75 minutes. You canโ€™t let it lapse at any stage, or else Dublin will just walk all over the top of you. I think theyโ€™ve proven that they can do that. Theyโ€™ll need to do it again obviously.

โ€œI just feel that the way Mayo are battle-hardened, the way theyโ€™re focused on this game, the way that maybe Dublin havenโ€™t had any challenges this summer, I think that may have an impact on them โ€” that maybe Mayo will just be that bit sharper on the day and will have enough to get the job done.โ€

โ€˜If Mayo go and win I still think that Dublin are probably the greatest team weโ€™ve ever seenโ€™

The Dubs heading into the dressing room

Diarmuid Connolly arrives James Crombie / INPHO James Crombie / INPHO / INPHO

โ€˜Both sides are unchangedโ€™, says RTร‰ commentator Ger Canning.

Weโ€™ll have to wait and see when the two teams take to the field.

Tim โ€˜Boom-shaka-lakaโ€™ McCarthy spoke to Kevin Oโ€™Brien about them impact of basketball coach Mark Ingle on Dublinโ€™s game, particularly on Ciarรกn Kilkenny.

โ€œIn a basketball team the point guardโ€™s role in general is to get the ball to the scorers.

โ€œTo me Kilkenny is the point guard, because what he does is he surveys the whole situation. For the amount of possession he has, he doesnโ€™t take a lot of shots. That doesnโ€™t mean he canโ€™t score, but he doesnโ€™t score the big points.

โ€œYouโ€™d think for somebody with so much possession in the offensive part of the field heโ€™d be taking more shots, but what he does is find players.

โ€œYou take Rock or Andrews who have less possession, they take more shots. If you look at the point guardโ€™s role, itโ€™s to get the ball to the scorers. Ciaran Kilkenny in Dublin gets the ball to the scorers.โ€

People really are underestimating this Dublin team and donโ€™t realize how good they are. This is a team that youโ€™ll only see once every generation, kinda like the Kerry team of the 70โ€ฒs/80โ€ฒs. They will beat Mayo today, and I believe theyโ€™ll do it quite handily. The firepower that Dublin have on the bench is the crucial aspect of this game. Once the benches come into play around the 45min mark youโ€™ll see the Dubs pull away. I take Dublin by 5-7 points.
