Dublin teenager fulfils dream of carrying the Olympic Torch in Brazil

13-year-old Mark O’Brien from Blackrock ran with the flame last night.

DUBLIN TEENAGER MARK O’Brien fulfilled his dream of carrying the Olympic Torch last night as he ran with the flame through the streets of Brazil.

The 13-year-old from Blackrock wrote to the head of the Rio 2016 organising committee and asked to be part of the relay team having watched many Irish people take part in the relay before London 2012 when the Torch came to Dublin.

“I’ve always had a huge interest in the Olympics and athletics and, a few years ago, I was very sick but someone from my athletics club let me borrow the torch from the London Olympics.

“Then, from that, I came up with the dream of running with the torch in the Rio Olympics and that motivated me to get better,” the youngster told the official Olympic Flame Twitter account.

And his dream became a reality last night as he was part of the relay team in Volta Redonda.

‘I got very nervous when I was winning at the 2012 Olympics’
