Once there, he found Ciaran Hearn on terrific support line and his offload took Tommy Allan out of the equation and allowed Van der Merwe scamper through the wreckage of scrambling defenders.
Despite the 10 – 0 advantage, Canada lost the game. Italy hit back with a try of their own and took the lead by the end of an exhilarating first half.
