Drogheda and Cobh Ramblers make First Division playoffs on dramatic final day

There was heartbreak for UCD ultimately, as they fell at the final hurdle.

THERE WERE SCENES of jubilation and despair as Drogheda beat UCD 2-1 at United Park tonight.

The win meant Drogheda sealed their place in the First Division promotion playoffs, with Cobh Ramblers joining them following a 2-0 win away to Athlone, while the Students missed out.

On the final day, with Limerick long since confirmed as league champions, there were still three teams in contention for the two playoff spots — Drogheda on 49 points, UCD on 48 points and Cobh on 47 points.

Marc Griffin put Drogheda ahead in their crucial match at home to the Students, before Mark Langtry equalised for the visitors just before half-time.

Adam Wixted then proved to be the hero for Drogs, as his goal on 63 minutes turned out to be decisive, consigning UCD to another year of First Division football in the process.

Cobh still needed a win to ensure their place in the playoffs, however, and a first-half strike by Rob Lehane and a late Matthew Whelan header secured a vital three points for the visitors.

Drogheda will now play Cobh in the playoffs over two legs during the next fortnight .

Final day results in full:

Athlone 0-2 Cobh

Cabinteely 0-1 Limerick

Drogheda 2-1 UCD

Shelbourne 0-1 Waterford United
