Sensational strike caps Belgian star Mertens' hat-trick in Napoli rout

Bologna found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-0 whooping.

BELGIUM’S DRIES MERTENS smashed in a hat-trick in Serie A tonight as Napoli ran riot with a 6 – 0 win over mid-table Bologna.

The 28-year-old left it late to complete his hat-trick and help Napoli to their biggest league win since 1987, but his 88th minute strike was undoubtedly the best of the half dozen.

Mertens had a hand in Manolo Gabbiadini’s 10th minute opener and the striker ensured the second placed side in Serie A took a two-goal advantage into the second half with a cool penalty.

Mertens’ low blast through the keeper’s legs put him on the score-sheet and the result beyond all doubt. And he would capitalise on a defensive slip 10 minutes from time before producing his blockbuster finish on 88 minutes. David Lopez completed the rout with a well-timed run through traffic in injury time.
