Galway too good for Derry in Pearse Stadium washout

Galway march on to the next round after the six point win.

Galway 1-11

Derry 0-8

Daragh Small reports from Pearse Stadium, Galway.

DANNY CUMMINS’ FIFTH championship goal was the key score as Galway saw off Derry in dreadful conditions at Pearse Stadium.

Constant wind and rain made for a testing evening for both sides but it was Galway who adapted better and ran out convincing winners after a slow start.

Derry got few of the 50-50 calls from Cork referee Conor Lane and the decisive score came after Cailean O’Boyle was denied a penalty and Galway countered.

Seven passes later saw Liam Silke return the ball to Cummins and he rifled the ball to the net and Derry’s championship was over for another year.

It was a very disappointing conclusion to a game which started so brightly when Eon Bradley, Benny Heron and Daniel Heavron kicked point to put the 0-3 to 0-0 in front after nine minutes.

But Galway did not panic and with Derry giving away frees in shooting positions, Gary Sice and Paul Conroy punished them with seven pointed frees before the break.

Sice got five of them and Derry suffered another blow when Brendan Rogers was harshly given a black card for a foul on Johnny Duane.

Derry responded before the break with points from Heavron and Heron before Galway finally got their first point from play when the superb Gareth Bradshaw pointed from the right 90 seconds into stoppage time to leave it 0-8 to 0-5 at the interval.

Derry cut the gap to just point with points from Heavrion and O’Boyle but, remarkably, they did not score again until injury time.

Galway took over in midfield through Fiontan O Curraoin and Tom Flynn and with Bradshaw and Gary O’Donnell also coming forward from the half-back line, they met the Derry challenge head-on.

Sice landed another free and then O’Donnell scored after a wonderful pick-up from Sice and Galway were ahead by four when Cummins wrapped it up eight minutes from the end.

Scorers for Galway: G Sice 0-7 (7f), D Cummins 1-0, P Conroy 0-2 (2f) G Bradshaw & G O’Donnell 0-1 each.

Scorers for Derry: D Heavron 0-3, B Herron 0-2 (2f), E Bradley, C O’Boyle & N Forrester 0-1 each.

I thought Eoin Murphy was incredible yesterday and was a clear man of the match, without him Kilkenny would not have been in the match near the end. Pundits seem to pick the winning team most of the time.

Eoin Murphy has to get an all star for that performance alone

There were many worthy winners from both games, Eoin Murphy produced the greatest display of goalkeeping I’ve ever seen. That said Tom Morrissey put in a huge performance for Limerick.
Podge has been immense for Clare this year, his work rate was incredible, he’s back to his best after a few tough years. Tony Kelly is also a notable mention.

Eoin Murphy was MOTM yesterday by a distance.
As a kilkenny supporter, I know we’re out of the championship, but Eoin has also done enough in Kilkenny’s seven cship games to ensure he gets an allstar award come years end.

@sean de paore: He was top class but losing quarter finalists don’t get any all stars. Rightly or wrongly, that’s just the way it is. Many years Kilkenny got 9 all stars after only playing two serious matches so it works both ways.

@Mike: national league winners often do though so he’s in with a shout. The new format changes things too.

@Philip McLoughlin: Ah they got to the semi final in those years to be fair. I’d like to think the new format will deliver all stars to players who consistently excelled in their province but I wouldn’t hold my breath. The two finalists will still hoover up 11 or 12 with the semi finalists getting the last 3 or 4.

@Mike: Brian Lohan was All-star full back in 1996 based on Clare’s single championship outing that year against Limerick.
I know that’s a bit mad, but there is no better keeper out there than Eoin Murphy, he’s probably going to go down as the greatest.

@Declan Breen: I’d say better, this guy has everything, cat like reflexes, superb ball skills, but his long range free taking and ability to attack the ball and launch an attack is a massive bonus.
