DERRY CONJURED A thrilling second-half comeback to edge past 14-man Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park this afternoon.
Chrissy Bradley scored the only goal of the game but the dismissal of Feargal Flanagan moments before half-time proved to be the game’s turning point.
The visitors, trailing by four points at that juncture, made their numerical advantage count on the restart to reduce the deficit but Cavan weren’t prepared to roll over.
The Breffni Men responded with a couple of fine scores of their own to maintain their three point lead heading into the final quarter.
But Derry moved up a gear as Niall Toner scored three points in quick succession to level proceedings before the clinical Mark Lynch — who scored seven — put the Oak Leaf County into a slender lead.
A thrilling finale was in store in front of a healthy crowd and despite scores from Dara McVeety and Jack Brady, Damian Barton’s men pulled clear to record a two-point win.
Derry advance to the final round of the qualifiers, where they will play either Tipperary or the losers of tomorrow’s Connacht final between Galway and Roscommon.
