DERRY CITY skipper, Ryan McBride was shown a straight red card in the dying embers of a dismal draw against Bray Wanderers at Brandywell.

Referee Paul Tuite gave the defender his marching orders for a robust challenge on Bray substitute, Chris Lyons, with five minutes remaining and the game scoreless.

His dismissal summed up a frustrating night for City who struggled to break down the Wicklow men’s stubborn defence.

It was McBride who had Derry’s best chance of the first half and he should really have scored when presented with a free header, but his effort was safely gathered by Stephen McGuinness.

Philip Lowry had his effort ruled out for offside on 74 minutes but the home side lacked the urgency needed in front of goal, while Bray were happy to contain their hosts throughout.

A defensive-minded Bray were intent on soaking up any pressure from the home lot, but Derry offered no urgency in attack throughout a stuttering first half.

Anthony Elding went down inside the box under the challenge of Hugh Douglas when he attempted to get on the end of Patrick McEleney’s cross, but a half hearted appeal for a penalty was dismissed by Tuite.

Patrick McEleney registered Derry’s first shot on target on 18 minutes, following a neat exchange with Cillian Morriso,n but his left-foot strike from 20 yards was saved by Stephen McGuinness.

Derry really should have scored on the half-hour mark, when Patrick McEleney whipped in a free-kick from wide on the left and McBride directed his free header safely into the arms of the Bray keeper.

Right on the stroke of half-time, Bray came close to going in front from David Cassidy’s corner kick, as Douglas rose highest at the back post, but his powerful header went narrowly wide.

Bray keeper McGuinness came to claim McEleney’s inswinging corner 10 minutes after the break, but fluffed his lines. The ball fell to Aaron Barry at the back post, but the defender couldn’t turn it towards goal, and the chance went begging.

Bray countered on 57 minutes as Cassidy played Adam Hanlon into space on the left and his well struck effort was palmed away by Gerard Doherty before Philip Lowry headed clear the danger.

Elding then played Cillian Morrison through on goal, but the Letterkenny man’s first time shot was saved by the feet of McGuinness.

Philip Lowry stooped low to head the ball into the back of the net after Aaron Barry headed McEleney’s free-kick off the crossbar, but the assistant referee’s flag was raised for offside.

Derry skipper McBride was then shown a straight red card for the aforementioned rash tackle on Lyons, as the home side had to see out the final five minutes with 10 men.
