Baseball star shows off severely swollen face after being struck by 90mph fastball

The Houston Astros prospect will find Easter Egg munching difficult this weekend.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL batting prospect Delino DeShields is grabbing headlines for all the painful reasons after copping a 90mph fastball to the face in a Double-A game.

DeShields is playing with the Houston Astros’ affiliate Corpus Christi Hooks down in the Texas League. The 2010 eighth overall MLB draft pick came to the plate, on Friday, with a home run in mind and was left flattened by a vicious, 90mph fastball.

He received treatment at home plate but was able to leave the field under his own steam. By the time De Shields got to the hospital, that evening, the swelling on his cheek and jaw had reached exponential levels.

The jaw, unsurprisingly, was broken. DeShields is back home now and, this afternoon, the swelling has eased a little while a black eye has crept to the surface.

This is how DeShields looks on his better, non-swollen days:

DeShields is hoping to get back to hitting pitches again, at Whataburger Field, as soon as possible.
