Rio Olympics liveblog: Day 8

There’s a busy day in store for Team Ireland.

THROUGHOUT THE GAMES we’ll bring you all the info you need to set you up for the Olympic day ahead.

Think of this slot as your balanced nutritional start to propel you through an intense sporting day ahead.

(All times are Irish, no gloating about your exotic location allowed)

From Bolt to Team Ireland hopes: what to watch in Rio today

There’s a busy and dramatic day in store once again. And plenty of action on the track.

The likes of Usain Bolt, Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill will do their thing before Michael Phelps will try to add another gold in the Olympic medley relay.

That’s not a bad line up at all.

Team Ireland meanwhile have plenty to look forward to.

Boxers Stephen Donnelly and Brendan Irvine are out, Annalise Murphy doesn’t get a break, the golfers continue their tournament and lots more.

Here’s a full breakdown of our representatives in action today.

Pádraig Harrington's about to get going on Moving Day in Rio

He may be one of the oldest Olympians in town, but Paddy Harrington is loving his Games experience.

He’d love it even more, of course, if he could move up that scoreboard today.

The Dubliner tees off at 1.36pm. He’s nine behind, one under par after the first two days’ action.

Shannon McCurley is almost ready in the women’s keirin heats

A1 Shannon!

The Aussie-born cyclist is on the track and set for a 2pm start.

The 24-year-old is from Melbourne; her mother is from Dublin and her father is from Belfast. These are her first Olympic Games.

Kerry O’Flaherty next up for Team Ireland in women’s 3000m steeplechase heat

The Newtownards native is heading for the line in a busy spell for the Irish side. Heat 1 is off at 2.05pm and will be the 35-year-old’s first experience of the Olympics.

Kerry O'Flaherty off in the first 300m steeplechase heat

There’s two more Irish to come in these heats, of course, but O’Flaherty is off.

First three qualify plus six fastest losers.

Sanita Puspure wins C final to clinch 13th place finish for the Games

That’s a nice way to finish things off form the Cork-based rower. Fair dues.

Kerry O'Flaherty fourth from the back

She’s moving up a little but this race is beyond O’Flaherty.

Kerry O'Flaherty finishes 14th and fails to qualify from heat

The Newtownards athletes couldn’t live with a blistering pace really but she moved up a few positions ahead of the final lap.

Ruth Jebet wins the first heat. It’s a season best time of 9:45:43.

Shannon McCurley is about to become the first Irish woman to take part in Olympic track cycling

Let’s do this.

Michelle Finn takes to the line for next heat in 3000m steeplechase

This is the busiest period of the Games for the Irish so far. Finn is ready to go.

Second last for McCurley in tough heat

The Melbourne native found herself out the back halfway through there but managed to ultimately finish second from last in the end and has a repechage to come.

Finn fourth from the back with two laps to go

The Cork runner is doing her best to hang on in there.

Finn finishes 11th after strong finish

The Leevale runner battled around and finished very well, overtaking a few on the way.

It’s a time of 9:49:45.

Sara Treacy next up in 3000m steeplechase

The Birmingham-based doctor is the last in this trio of Irish female steeplechasers to go in the heats.

Seamus Power is up and running for day 3 on the golf course

He enjoyed his round yesterday so let’s see what Power can do today.

Pádraig Harrington, meanwhile, has moved to two under for the tournament.

No luck as Sara Treacy brought down in steeplechase

That’s so unlucky. Treacy was involved in a fall halfway round that really hampered her progress. She came in about 12th but times and positions to be confirmed.

12th-place finish for Sara Treacy

Yeah, it’s 12th, in a time of 9:46:24. Great effort.

Shannon McCurley off again in the velodrome in repechage race

And she’s looking good.

Third for McCurley in repechage on the track so won't progress

The Australian-born rider gave a really good account of herself but won’t advance unfortunately.

Ireland's youngest boxer Brendan Irvine next up in the ring

The 20-year-old Belfast native takes on Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan in the first round of the 52kg tournament.

First round to Zoirov against Brendan Irvine

All three judges give first round 10-9 to Zoirov.

Irvine is being completely outclassed

This is looking like another defeat for Ireland’s underfire boxing team.

Irvine on the brink of elimination

It’s 20-18 in favour of the Uzbek from two judges and 20-17 from B. He needs something special in the final round.

Irvine beaten as boxers' poor showing at Games continues

The 20-year-old is better than that but he was completely outclassed by the Uzbek fight today.

Great news as Sara Treacy earns place in 3000m steeplechase final on appeal

Earlier we saw Sara Treacy tripped up in her heat and ultimately miss out on the qualification places.

But there’s good news from our reporter Sinead O’Carroll in Rio. Treacy has been re-instated to the final following an appeal by the Irish team. It goes on Monday afternoon.

Steven Donnelly to fight for a medal next up

The Ballymena man is one way away from securing our first boxing medal of the Games.

Donnelly faces Mohammed Rabii (Morocco) in the quarter-final of the 69kg division in a few moments.

Irish golfers on the move in Rio

Seamus Power is flying and is now at six under (through five) while Harrington is five under (through nine).

Steven Donnelly ready to go against world champion after boxing venue delay

It’s showtime. Get to a telly if you can; there’s a medal on the line.

Donnelly holds his own but down after first round

All three judges have it 10-9 to Rabii.

Donnelly loses first two rounds

One judge had the second round as a draw while the other two thought the Moroccan shaded it again.

Steven Donnelly goes out on split decision

The world champion goes through on a split decision.

The Belfast man did himself justice and didn’t exactly get any breaks form the referee either.

We’re down to Katie Taylor and Michael Conlan.

Irish golfers have dropped a couple of shots

Seamus Power is now four under through nine holes, while Padraig Harrington is one shot back on the 13th.

Britain’s Justin Rose leads the way on ten under.

Seaton and McGovern finish 4th in Race 3

The pair are going strong in the Men’s 49er and take fourth place in Race 3. They’re now third overall.

Annalise Murphy fighting back in Race 9

Having fallen back to 16th, she’s now up to sixth. Great work.

Annalise Murphy claims 6th in Race 9

Another super result for the 26-year-old Dubliner.

6th for sailors Brewster and Tidey in Race 3 of the 49er FX

Andrea Brewster and Saskia Tidey have claimed sixth in Race 3 of the Women’s 49er FX.

Annalise Murphy is second overall heading into Race 10

As it stands, she’s in line to claim the silver medal. What an incredible feat that would be, but there is still work to be done.

Harrington records a 67 in the third round of the golf

Six birdies today as Padraig Harrington cards a 67 to sit on five under. That leaves him eighth overall — five shots back from leader Rose.

Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern win Race 4 of the 49ers

Superb from the lads! They’ve jumped up to second overall ahead of Race 5.

Disappointment for Brewster and Tidey in Race 4

A tough race and they’ve finished 18th place, so that will be their discard as it stands. They’re seventh overall.

Seaton and McGovern now third overall

They’ve come 14th in Race 5 of the 49ers, meaning they still sit in the medal positions.

Solid start from Annalise Murphy in Race 10

She’s third through Mark 1.

Seamus Power shoots a third round 74

It’s been a difficult day and he has lost ground after a 74. Tied for 26th on one under par overall.

Annalise Murphy 10th through Mark 5

She’s just behind Sara Carmo of Portugal and Australia’s Ashley Stoddart in Race 10 of the Women’s Laser Radial.

Annalise Murphy finishes 7th in Race 10

Super effort to gain three positions. It looks like she’ll go into Monday’s Medal Race in third overall.

Seaton and McGovern 4th overall

The 19th place in Race 6 will be discarded, leaving them just outside the medal places after their final race of the day.

Andrea Brewster & Saskia Tidey done for the day and are 12th overall in 49ers FX

The pair are now in 12th overall. It looked a little brighter earlier today and were in 7th at one stage. But, there’s another six races left for them.

20-year-old Finn Lynch finishes 32nd in Men's Laser

The Carlow native has been ear-marked for Tokyo 2020 but what an experience this has been. His 10th race ended in disappointment with disqualification but he can be extremely proud of himself. Lots more to come from him on the Olympic stage.

Scott Evans is about to go in his group-stage badminton match

A place in the last 16 is on the line as the 28-year-old Dubliner takes on Ygor Coelho de Oliveira.

Scott Evans comfortably claims first set of crunch badminton match

Never in doubt. 21-8 in the opening set and that was superb stuff from the Dubliner. The Brazilian opponent may have the crowd support but Evans has silenced them. In total control here.

Scott Evans loses the second set and there will be a deciding third now

Well, that was a lot different. The start of that set was a disaster for Evans as Oliveira came out of the traps really quickly. He fought back and got close but it finished 21-19 in the end. All to play for in the third now.

Scott Evans is through to the last 16 in men's badminton

Brilliant! That was just like the opening set – never in doubt. 21-8 The shirt is off again and he is loving it! The boos ring out from the home crowd but he doesn’t care! His historic Olympics continues! It took him three sets but he gets the job done. Superb stuff.
