Dundalk striker McMillan becomes LOI's all-time leading Champions League goalscorer

He is now only behind Roy Keane in the Irish goalscoring charts in the competition.

DAVID MCMILLAN IS confident Dundalk can keep their Champions League campaign alive in Norway next week by scoring a crucial away goal after last nightโ€™s first leg at Oriel Park.

The striker became the League of Irelandโ€™s all-time leading scorer in the European Cup when he opened the scoring for Stephen Kennyโ€™s side against Rosenborg, but Tore Reginiussenโ€™s equaliser means the Lilywhites are up against it to progress.

McMillanโ€™s first-half strike, his seventh in the Champions League, means only Roy Keane (15) is ahead of him in the Irish goalscoring charts.

โ€œDelighted to score again for the club in Europe. I thought we started the game really well and deservedly went ahead but it was unfortunate to concede the goal just before half-time,โ€ he said afterwards.

โ€œI think we were by far the better team and we head over to Norway next week confident we can get a result.

โ€œSometimes itโ€™s difficult when youโ€™re not playing against these guys every week so youโ€™ve got to do as much as you can around the video analysis. Itโ€™s hard to really know the quality until you get out on the pitch.โ€

McMillan added that Dundalk can take confidence from last yearโ€™s exploits in Europe as they look ahead to Wednesdayโ€™s second leg at the Lerkendal Stadion.

โ€œI think we matched them in every department so weโ€™re disappointed not to have a lead heading to Norway.

โ€œWe know they will be stronger at home but weโ€™ve got to believe that we can get the job done.

โ€œWeโ€™ve scored in a lot of away games in Europe last year so I donโ€™t think it is a problem for us. Itโ€™s looks like a nice place to play football so weโ€™ll enjoy the opportunity and get the job done.โ€
