De Gea was reportedly moments away from signing for Real Madrid. Jon Buckle

Could David De Gea pull off an incredible u-turn on his Man United career?

It’s being reported that the Red Devils will offer the 24-year-old a new deal in October

DAVID DE GEA was moments away from becoming a Real Madrid player before delayed paperwork ultimately prevented the Man United goalkeeper from fulfilling his dream move.

Most expect De Gea to now sign a pre-contract agreement with Real in January, but the latest reports suggest that the Red Devils are still holding out hope that the Spanish international will commit to the club long term.

The Mirror report that Louis van Gaal’s side will offer the 24-year-old a new deal in October, which is understood to be worth more than Real were offering him.

United — who have included De Gea in their Champions League squad despite the disillusioned player being omitted from all their Premier League match-day squads so far this season — are eager to avoid losing the goalkeeper, who is a free agent once his contract runs out next summer, for nothing.

Meanwhile, it’s also being reported that the fall-out from the De Gea debacle means Man United have blown their chances of ever signing Gareth Bale while he is a Real Madrid player.
