David de Gea could be a Real Madrid player by Tuesday

Various reports speculate that a deal could be tied up within the next two days.

IT’S A SAGA that has run since the tail-end of last season but there may finally be a resolution in the coming days.

According to widespread media reports, David de Gea is expected to move to Real Madrid with the Spanish giants inching closer to completing a deal.

There remains conflicting information though about just how imminent the transfer is. Some media outlets are suggesting no formal bid has been tabled by Madrid while others are speculating a £29 million bid has been agreed.

De Gea has not submitted a transfer request and will not attempt to force through a move to the Spanish capital.

Some reports speculate that United have tentatively inquired about Gareth Bale but have been rebuffed. Earlier in the summer, they had wanted Sergio Ramos in a player exchange but the defender subsequently signed a new contract at the Bernabeu.

The last-gasp nature of all of this is far from ideal for United who have earmarked Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen as the preferred replacement for de Gea.

Van Gaal has worked with the 26-year-old with the Dutch national team though famously substituted him moments before a World Cup quarter-final shootout against Costa Rica last summer, replacing him with Tim Krul.

United already have had to deal with the arrival of one new goalkeeper in recent weeks but van Gaal remains unconvinced by Sergio Romero’s abilities, suggesting earlier this week that the performances of United’s defence has meant the Argentine hasn’t been properly tested yet.
