David de Gea has opened talks with Man United over a new long-term contract - reports

Is he staying or going?

MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE entered into negotiations with goalkeeper David de Gea over a new contract, just a week after the Spaniard’s move to Real Madrid fell through at the last minute.

Widespread reports this evening say de Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes, was at United’s training complex on Thursday to begin talks on a new deal.

The Spaniard’s proposed move to Real Madrid fell through as the relevant paperwork wasn’t submitted before the deadline, meaning de Gea will stay at Old Trafford until January at least.

His current contract expires next summer and although United had previously given up hope of tying de Gea down to a new long-term contract, it now appears he’s had a change of heart.

De Gea has yet to feature this season as Louis van Gaal opted to leave him out of the squad with his future uncertain. It’s expected he’ll return to the side for Man United’s clash with Liverpool on Saturday evening.

Following the collapse of de Gea’s move to Spain, club sources indicated they were confident any damage done between the player and van Gaal could be easily repaired.

Only time will tell – starting this weekend.
